When in Wimbledon why not take the opportunity to play a match in the home of tennis!
The history of Wimbledon began in 1877 when the All England Croquet Club held its first lawn tennis tournament, featuring only a Gentlemen's Singles event won by Spencer Gore. The tournament has since grown into the world's oldest and most prestigious, adding the Ladies' Singles in 1884, and eventually relocating to its current Church Road grounds in 1922.
CES Wimbledon has membership at a local tennis club which is only a 5 minute walk from our main school.
Tennis began as a 12th-century French handball game, jeu de paume, played with the palm before rackets and indoor courts emerged, evolving into "real tennis" popular with royalty; modern tennis took shape in the 1870s when Major Walter Clopton Wingfield created lawn tennis (Sphairistike) for outdoor play, standardizing rules and equipment, leading to the first Wimbledon in 1877 and the global sport we know today.
